Back Bay Toastmasters
Boston Massachusetts
I love going to Toastmasters meetings and learning new things. This is a club that definitely is the most different from a regularly formatted Toastmaster club. They started off the meeting with a Public Speaking tip. Then had guests introduce themselves and a movie they most recently watched. This was a good way to engage the guests.
Instead of a regular table topic session, they had a table topics debate with timing-yellow card at 45 sec and red card at 1 minute. We (I was included in the debate) debated 3 different issues. My topic was breakfast vs dinner and was assigned to argue in favor of dinner. I believe I persuaded admirably the virtues of dinner, although my favorite meal of the day in reality is when my husband cooks me breakfast. I feel the love.
Instead of prepared speeches they had show & tell (used the share screen feature) or impromptu speeches. These speeches are supposed to be 3-5 minutes. Steve was able to share an impromptu speech. Although, this was fun, I wonder why they don’t do prepared speeches. Do these 3-5 min speeches qualify for a pathways speech if they don’t follow the criteria or time for the speech?
After the meeting was over the president let everyone know that the “lobby” was open 15 minutes after the meeting so they could socialize. We stayed for a while and talked. This was a very interesting and fun meeting. We were able to participate. I definitely would go back there and, if I were wanting to join a club, this is one I would consider. The education part is my only concern but they get thumbs up on their preparedness, organization, and energy.
